Principality of Asturias

Totality will cover the community in the eclipse of 2026

Asturias, with its rugged landscape and its natural viewpoints, will become one of the most breathtaking settings to experience the great eclipse of 2026. The region offers a decisive advantage: the possibility of choosing between observing the eclipse over he infinite horizon of the Cantabrian Sea or framed by the imposing peaks of the Cantabrian Mountains.

12 August 2026 will be a historic date for the region. The path of totality shall cover 100 % of the Autonomous Region from west to east. The three major cities, Oviedo, Gijón and Avilés, will be plunged into absolute darkness for almost one minute and 45 seconds. All of this will occur at sunset, with the Sun descending towards the west.

After this start, Asturias will take part in the next two events as a somewhat distant watcher. On both 2 August 2027 and 26 January 2028, the eclipses will be experienced as partial eclipses The event in January 2028, although only a partial eclipse, will offer a spectacular sight along the Asturian coast, coinciding with the winter sunset, the sun will be partially hidden sinking into the Bay of Biscay.
