Catalonia looks up to the sky

Under the initiative "Catalonia looks up at the sky", the Autonomous Government of Catalonia has launched a comprehensive planning of the total solar eclipse of 12 August 2026 to ensure a coordinated, safe and high scientific and social impact management. Twenty-six priority observation points have been defined in 20 municipalities in the entire strip, chosen and validated according to criteria of safety, accessibility, capacity and quality of visibility.

At the same time, a strategy of dissemination and citizen participation is being developed, in collaboration with scientific entities, which will include educational, cultural and scientific dissemination activities throughout the territory. All the programming and updated information on the event will be centralised on the official website, which will be the point of reference for the public.

In 2026, while in the north of the province of Barcelona and the metropolitan area of Barcelona a extremely deep partial eclipse may be seen (close to 99% obscuring, which will plunge the cities in a sudden and overwhelming darkness), the path of absolute totality will cross the provinces of Tarragona and the south of Lleida.

On 2 August 2027, the eclipse will be partial. In 2028, the path of annularity will cross the province of Tarragona and the southern part of the province of Lleida.
