Region of Murcia
A major player in 2028
The Region of Murcia presents this astronomical trio as a play in three acts with a spectacular denouement. The region will experience the first two events as a luxury prelude, preparing to be one of the protagonists of the closing of the cycle in 2028.
The cycle will begin on 12 August 2026 with a extremely deep partial eclipse. Although the path of totality will skip the region, Murcia will experience a very noticeable darkening at dusk (exceeding 90% in the north of the region). The sunlight will become metallic and the shadows will be sharply outlined on the ground, offering a different view of inland landscapes and orchards.
After another very deep partial eclipse on 2 August 2027 (favoured by the proximity of the region to the zone of totality in North Africa), the region will have its moment: On 26 January 2028, Murcia will be one of the epicentres of the annular eclipse. The "ring of fire" band will cross the region from west to east, covering virtually all of its territory. Cities such as Murcia, Cartagena and Lorca will have an enviable location to see the phenomenon. As it happens in the middle of winter and at sunset, the sun will become a perfect golden ring suspended over the Mar Menor or cutting out the silhouettes of the castles and fortresses of the region, giving the definitive image that will close the Iberian Trio.
